7 CBD Oils and Products for More Restful Sleep

CBD is buzzing right now, but it doesn't get you buzzed. In fact, it can be pretty handy when you need to wind down at the end of the day.

So, what is CBD, anyway? CBD, or cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound (it doesn't get you "high") in the cannabis plant. It is commonly extracted from hemp or cannabis plants into an oil that can be consumed or applied to the skin. However you take it, there's plenty of anecdotal and growing clinical evidence for CBD's helpfulness in relieving pain, lessening anxiety, and combatting different levels of insomnia.

CBD oils are often sold in small bottles with droppers and are consumed by the drop sublingually (under the tongue) for fast, effective absorption. These bottles and their spray bottle counterparts are also known as tinctures. You can also get oil in jars or blended into lotions.

Everyone reacts to CBD differently, so there's no magical number percentage or dosage that will help you catch some Zzzs. To learn more about CBD oil and how we chose our picks, keep reading after our recommendations.

This is one of the tastiest, most effective and reliable CBD oils out there. We're partial to the vanilla flavor, but it also comes in a natural and mint flavor. The MCT oil (think Bulletproof coffee) makes it easier for your body to absorb the CBD.

With CBD potency ranging from 300mg to 1000mg, there's a dosage for everyone. You're just a drop (or more!) away from having sweet dreams.

Water soluble CBD is rare, and well-recommended tinctures are even more special. American Shaman makes a zen-inducing tincture in super fun flavors like Cherry Limeade, Grape, and Pina Colada (there's a Natural flavor too!).

Unlike other tinctures, these drops are water-soluble which makes it easier (and faster) for your body to absorb the CBD. Plus, you can choose between tinctures with no THC or 0.3 percent THC. A small amount of THC tends to help CBD work better, but it's not necessary for everyone.

Hemp CBD oil capsules for traditionalists

Whether you're used to melatonin or Ambien, popping a pill or two has been the main way people get to sleep faster and stay asleep longer. If you want to make an easy transition (or if you just don't like the taste of tinctures), these capsules from Charlotte's Web (CW) are for you.

You can get 30 or 60 count bottles in the Colorado brand's regular or plus strengths. The capsules include trace cannabinoids other than CBD, so you get a more efficient product.

This coconut CBD oil blend can be used under your tongue for quick absorption, in food and drinks, and topically to get its relaxing effects. If you like to vary your techniques, if there's more than one person in your home who has trouble sleeping, or if you just don't know which method is best for you, this is the perfect catch-all product.

Felines and Fidos alike will chill out with this simple CBD oil from Pet Releaf. The only ingredients are the hemp CBD oil and coconut oil, so you don't have to worry about additives or preservatives.

This 100 mg CBD extract is great for testing the waters with any dog or cat, but it's ideal for smaller dogs and all cats. For dogs over 50 lbs, they also have a 200 mg, 300 mg, and 500 mg version.

Note: The American Veterinary Medical Association currently doesn't have a stance on CBD use in pets. Local vets in states where medical marijuana and hemp CBD are legal, however, can talk you through whether this is right for your pet.

Apothecanna makes several CBD-infused lotions with different purposes. Their 8 oz Calming Creme is ideal for when you're looking to release some tension as part of your bedtime routine. With notes of chamomile, lavender, and frankincense, this fragrant lotion will make the Sandman jealous.

We especially love that you can also get this lotion in a travel-sized bottle — perfect for those of us who have trouble sleeping in new places!

Medical CBD oil* for serious insomnia

Stanley Brothers are the poster kids for medical and hemp CBD. Two of their hybrid tinctures provide different ratios of THC oil to their popular CW Hemp CBD oil. If sleep eludes you due to insomnia, whether its on its own or a symptom of another condition, these drops can help you stop counting thousands of sheep.

*The tinctures are currently only available in California and Colorado (ask your local dispensary), but they hope to expand distribution to other states.

How We Chose

We first referenced recommendations from cannabis news sites and other lifestyle news sites. We also consulted a few cannabis and CBD marketplaces to get a sense of product efficacy.

We also decided to not choose edible CBD oils that contain olive oil because, depending on the dose and your sensitivity, those products can lead to various forms of intestinal distress. That's not what you want at any time, let alone bedtime.

We recommend double checking Amazon results at this time. The vast majority of those products are not CBD oil, but hemp oil, which has low CBD concentrations.

Hemp vs. Medical CBD

Oil made from pressed hemp seeds is the more popular version of CBD because it is legal in most states and you can buy it online. To be considered hemp CBD oil, the THC level (a psychoactive cannabinoid) needs to be below 0.3 percent. The CBD levels in these hemp oils tend to be less than 5%.

CBD oil made from the whole marijuana plant — often referred to as medical CBD — can only be acquired from a local dispensary or approved in-state delivery service in states where cannabis is approved for recreational and/or medicinal use. The THC levels here can be up to 5% while the CBD levels are often around 20%.
